My Story, By Peg
When most people hear the words "Feral Cat", they think of Wild, clawing, biting creatures. Yes, some are, not by choice, but due to the fact everyday is a fight for mere survival.
When I became employed at a local boutique, there were numerous feral cats residing under the building. My heart broke for these helpless animals and needless to say , I started feeding, and feeding well, I might add. Word got out in the "cat community" and more and more started showing up. Once they knew I was not a harmfull threat and brought the good stuff , I was able to pet them and they actually started greeting me.
When I started finding babies is when it got tough.... Two ,neither I, nor a local veterinarian could save. Two tiny sisters had to have blood transfusions at emergency vet in Daytona, One had to be rescued by local fire dept. as was in a water retainer well under the building , her little head was just above the water. (those guys were determined to help get her out and were wonderful). Four babies not 2 weeks old, had to be bottle fed every 4 hours, I even brought them to work with me as they had to be fed round the clock. I have had six adult female cats spayed and found wonderful loving homes for a dozen or so kittens.
The cost factors of my quest became overwhelming. I had previously asked local veterinarians for help in neutering and spaying and to be honest, no one seemed to care. The only help I was able to get at that time was with Halifax Humane Shelter in Daytona. They were reasonable with their fees and understood what I was trying to do.
I started painting T shirts and selling them in the boutique, my portion of each sale when into my "Cat" fund, to help with expenses of not only spaying, but formula, emergency vet bills, worming, food, ect. It was only just recently that I came into contact with Laurie from No Pet Left Behind organization, We have not only developed a great friendship based on our love of animals, but I now have an organization to help with my quest to make a difference in these poor helpless animals lives. They are all Gods creatures and they deserve our help without having babies every few months.
With all our help in spaying and neutering, we hope to help the over-population of cats and dogs in our community and surrounding areas. -WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
